Four: Rise of the Surfer

The original Fantastic Four movie was not widely regarded as the finest of super hero outings. Personally, I found it light entertainment that required no thought whatsoever: a kids film. No match for the likes of Spider-man, but a wheeze none-the-less

This second outing of the fabulous foursome introduces yet another Marvel character to the cinema-going public, a particular favourite of mine: The Silver Surfer. Let's get straight down to it, as a friend of mine said this is more Batman & Robin than Batman Begins. That about hits the nail right on; this is very much a kids movie, but not a bad one. The effects are good, they have done justice to the chrome-plated Surfer but just don't expect much depth to the characters or plot.

The story, in brief, sees the world under threat from the mysterious surfer and the FF crew must join forces with an arch-rival to discover what is happening and how to stop it. The character of the Surfer is unveiled slowly, from shiny-arsed hole maker to 'human' with doubts of his own. That's as deep as it gets.

The end of the film leaves the possibility of a Surfer stand-alone outing, which I'll be looking forward to. If they go more along the Batman Begins route, it could be very good indeed. Otherwise it will be another one for the kiddies - and us adults who, every now and then, like not having to think too much.

Mint! You've joined the team! Nice one. Sorry for not noticing, but I've been off the internet for a while at home and haven't posted anything from work for yonks.

As for the film, not seen it yet, but I totally agree about the first one. Quite keen to see this too. :)

This film sets about trying to get the bottom of this question, detailing the last few hours of his life in his bunker in Berlin as the red army approached. The film, some would say rather controversially, answers the question early on with his pie fight with Himler coming as the starting credits fade. What follows is a romp through the final desperate hours of a ridiculous regime as they all, but their leader, seem to have grasped the fact that they’re buggered. The film has many memorable and chilling scenes, such as Dr Goebbels’ wife killing her own children rather than letting them fall into Communist hands. The Brothers Grimm

5 out of 10 On the face of it The Brothers Grimm is a perfect match for the dark surrealism of Terry Gilliam . However it fails to live up to its potential. The brothers (played by Matt Damon and Heath Ledger ) are travelling con-artists who arrive in a village with a real fairy tale curse. For a Fairy tale the cinematography is very grey and brown. There is little of the Gilliam imagination that we might have expected. Most surprising of all is that the special effects ranged from the sublime (blobby gingerbread man) to the downright awful. A scene where a CGI scarf was floating down a river was particularly derisible. At times it seems that the script is a vehicle for referencing yet another fairy tale rather than to tell the tale that the viewer is actually watching. This is a shame because when the movie does get going there are moments to enjoy.
